In his digging down through the layers of English Poetry to the earliest stuff written, Michael comes eventually to the tale of monsters and dragons and the rise and fall and feuding of heroes and tribes and dynasties.

He says that the true craft of poetry is as much about how things are said as about what is said. The question as to how the Old English stuff was performed is regarded by some scholars as unknowable, while others write mind-boggling tomes about 'the rhythem of "Beowulf"' in an attempt, it seems, to turn the matter of rhythm in poetry into rocket-science.

Michael has a simple and musically-based way of doing 'Beowulf' and the older poetry and indeed all English Poetry. It works. The scholars would do well to take note.
